Mary Bailey

As a sculptor, Bailey is fascinated by the challenge of making objects that have never been seen or imagined. Working in wood, she combines forms that are both familiar and unfamiliar to create pieces with personality and presence. Ironwood Gallery is currently exhibiting five of Bailey’s sculptures made up of invented plant forms sprouting from various eccentric vessels and totems.
Bailey’s pieces evolve gradually through the process of drawing and experimentation. She starts with planed boards of basswood, maple or poplar that she laminates, cuts, shapes then assembles. The sculptures grow and change with the creation of their parts. She considers her creative process akin to drawing in three dimensions.
